5. In my opinion one of the most famous Belarusian writers is Yakub Kolas. In his works, Yakub Kolas was known for his sympathy towards the ordinary Belarusian peasantry. This was evident in his pen name 'Kolas', meaning 'ear of grain' in Belarusian. He wrote collections of poems Songs of Captivity and Songs of Grief, poems A New Land and Simon the Musician, stories, and plays. His poem The Fisherman's Hut is about the fight after unification of Belarus with the Soviet state. His trilogy At a Crossroads is about the pre-Revolutionary life of the Belarusian peasantry and the democratic intelligentsia. Yanka Kupala is also considered one of the greatest Belarusian-language writers of the 20th century. Kupala became recognized as a symbol of Belarusian culture during the Soviet era. In 1908 the first published collection of his poems, Жалейка (The Little Flute) brought on the ire of the czarist government, which ordered the book confiscated as an anti-government publication. Another eminent writer of our country is Vasil Bykav who is a prolific author of novels and novellas about World War II, is a monumental figure in Belarusian literature and civic thought. The writer's talent and the moral courage that permeates his writings earned him endorsements for the Nobel Prize nomination from, among others, Nobel Prize laureates Joseph Brodsky and Czeslaw Mitosz. Bykav's literary achievement lies in his sternly realistic, albeit touched by lyricism, depictions of World War II battles, typically with a small number of personages. In the ferociousness of encounter they face moral dilemmas both vis-a-vis their enemies and within their own Soviet world burdened by ideological and political constraints. Bykav's novellas that are available in English translation, such as "The Dead Feel No Pain" (1965), "The Ordeal" (1970), "Wolf Pack" (1975) and "Sign of Misfortune" challenged the official version of the war.
