Ex. 27. Что обозначают подчеркнутые слова? В скобках указаны номера абзацев.

It (1) = the list; they (1) = women; they (2) = women scientists; it (2) = an X-ray photo of the structure of DNA; it (3) = rain; they (4) = women researches.

Ex. 28. Скажите, согласны вы или нет с позицией автора.

Unfortunately, things seem to be the way author told them. In the early times women scientists were not recognized at all, and their inventions were often attributed to men scientists. History shows us a number of examples. Of course, nowadays the situation has changed, and women deservedly get recognition for their projects. But still there is some misjudgment or some kind of discrimination as women scientists and researches don't get paid as much as men do, and their projects are not that well sponsored.
COMMUNICATION

Ex. 2. Разбейтесь на пары и обсудите самое важное достижение человечества за последние 150 лет. Расскажите, почему вы считаете, что оно так важно.

1. Pupil 1: Which of these human achievements you consider to be of the greatest importance? I mean, all of them are of great value for the civilization and progress. And it's hard to decide on the most important one.

Pupil 2: Yes, it is kind of hard. But if we look carefully we can see that almost all of them are about technological progress, like exploration of space or the invention of the microchip. And there is only one invention that is not connected with the technological development, but with health and medicine.

Pupil V. I see what you mean. It's the discovery of penicillin. It's just what I was thinking about. Because penicillin, being a group of antibiotics, was historically significant as it was the first drug that was effective against many previously serious diseases.

Pupil 2: That is the thing. Such diseases as syphilis and staphylococcus were extremely dangerous in the early times and many people who suffered them died. But the discovery of penicillin has led to possibility of curing those diseases easily and thus has completely changed our lives.

Pupil V. It's true. And since all of the other inventions are supposed to make our life easier and more comfortable, this one has meant that terrible diseases can be cured and as a result of this, people have been able to save more lives. And what can be more important than that?!

Pupil 2: You are right. So, I guess, we came to consensus and defined our position on that point.
