2. Mir Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Belarus located in the town of Mir in the Karelichy District of the Hrodna voblast. The construction of the castle began at the end of the 15th century, in the Gothic architecture style. Building of the castle was completed by Duke llinich in early 16th century near the village Mir. Since that time it was owned by other people. It suffered greatly during World War II. The reconstruction works started in 1983. Ten years later the first museum expositions were opened to the public.

4. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk was built by Prince Vseslav Briacheslavich (rr. 1044-1101) between 1044 (it is first mentioned in the Voskresenskaia Chronicle under the year 1056) and 1066. It stands at the confluence of the Polota and Western Dvina Rivers on the eastern side of the city and is probably the oldest church in Belarus. The cathedral is, like the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev and Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod, named after the Holy Wisdom of God. The cathedral has been significantly rebuilt and heavily modified between the eleventh and eighteenth centuries. Indeed, only parts of the church date back to the time of Vseslav.

7. Brest Fortress formerly known as Brest-Litovsk Fortress was the 19th century Russian fortress in Brest, Belarus. It is one of the most important Soviet World War II war monuments commemorating the Soviet resistance against the German invasion on June 22,1941 (Operation Barbarossa). Following the war, in 1965 the title Hero-Fortress was given to the Fortress to commemorate the heroic defence of the frontier stronghold during the very first weeks of the Great Patriotic War. It was then part of the Byelorussian SSR. The title Hero-Fortress corresponds to the title Hero City, that has been awarded to the total of twelve Soviet cities.

Ex. 4. Сделайте диалог со своим партнером о том, что каждая нация

должна сохранять и оберегать для будущих поколений.

Pupil 1: Today on our history classes we started a new topic — Soviet Union period.

Pupil 2: Oh, that sounds interesting!

Pupil 1:1 was shocked to know how many churches were ruined during that time. They were the buildings of such a great historic and architectural value.

Pupil 2: Well, it's a well known fact. Unfoitunately not only churches were damaged. Many other historic sites were knocked down. Take, for example, Nesvizh Palace. In Soviet times it was used as a sanatorium, while the park gradually fell in neglect.

Pupil 1: It was a real blasphemy. How can people do such terrible things with their own history?
