to rebuild cities, towns and villages, to restore the economy, but they worked hard and soon the country rose from ashes like the phoenix bird.

Pupil 1: And what is the next major event?

Pupil 2:1 would say it is the proclamation of independence of our country in 1991. Belarus has become a sovereign, independent state with its own government, constitution, coat of arms, flag and national anthem.

Pupil 1: Thus, Belarus now is an independent country. Belarusian people value peace and want to be on good-neighbourly terms with all other nations. They pay tribute to their ancestors and believe that the country with such a unique history and rich cultural heritage will have a happy future.

Ex. 6. Обсудите с партнером борьбу белорусского народа за свою

независимость.

Pupil 1: The Belarusian history is mostly the history of its destruction and construction. The land of our country has seen all kind of enemies from far and near. It was invaded many times. But what did the Belarusians do? Did they fight the enemies, or just surrendered?

Pupil 2: Of course they fought the enemies! Remember the famous battle of Grunwald? Belarus was part of the Great Principality of Lithuania then, but the Principality was attacked by the Teutonic Order. It was a fierce fighting, but in the end the victory was on our side.

Pupil 1: Yes, now I begin to remember something. And what about other invaders?

Pupil 2: Well, we shouldn't forget the national movements of 1794 headed by Kostiushko and of 1865 headed by Kalinovsky. They wanted independence from the Russian Empire, to which the territory of Belarus belonged at the time.

Pupil 1: Thank you. I didn't know about that. I will look up the books for more information about the events. In fact, the only struggle for independence that I know about is the struggle of Belarusian people against fascist invaders in 1941-1945.

Pupil 2: No wonder you remember it! It is one of the most dramatic periods in our history.

Pupil 1: Yes, the victory in the Great Patriotic War was achieved at a high cost. Cities, towns and villages lay in ruins. But that was nothing compared to the losses of the people.

Pupil 2: That was a horrible time! It is hard even to think about all the horrors of war. Aren't we lucky to live in a sovereign and independent state?

Pupil 1: Yes, we definitely are.
