A. INVASIONS OF GREAT BRITAIN STOPPED

IN THE MIDDLE AGES

We are used to think about Great Britain as a rich country, a former colonial empire, a powerful state which is hard to defeat. Few people know that Great Britain wasn't a powerful and united centralized state all the time. If we go back to the Middle Ages, we'll see that the first ten centuries AD were the most fateful days in the British history. The British Isles were invaded more than once. The first inhabitants of the island were the Celtic people known as the Britons. Then in 43 AD the Roman conquest of Britain began. They had to fight many battles, but in the end the whole country was taken over by them. The Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia through the 5th century. Nowadays we still can find many marks of the things the Romans did when they invaded the country. The Romans were great builders of houses, and enough is left on the British territory to show how beautiful were the buildings when they were new. The Romans were also known as makers of the roads paved with stone. The most wonderful mark of the Roman domination is the remains of the wall on the border between England and Scotland. The wall was built to keep out the Picts — the people who lived in that part of Britain which is now called Scotland.

In approximately 495, when the Romans had already left the country, the Anglo-Saxon invasion began. The Anglo-Saxons, a collection of various Germanic peoples, established several kingdoms that became the primary powers in what is now England and parts of southern Scotland. The in the IP century the Vikings who came from Denmark invaded the eastern coast and destroyed lots of villages. In 1066 the Normans headed by William the Conqueror invaded and conquered England.

The Norman invasion was the last successful invasion of the Great Britain, though we can't even say that the Normans conquered Scotland or Wales — just England. No one historically has actually conquered the whole island of Great Britain.

All the invaders brought a lot of suffering and destruction to the land of Great Britain. But they also influenced a lot the development of the British culture and especially language. Romans brought with them Latin, Anglo-Saxons spoke the Germanic languages. The languages of the Vikings left marks in the English language too. And French, the language of the Normans changed a lot the language of the island. A lot of French words were added. Today most words in English connected with fighting, hunting, religion, art and cooking come from French.
