The collection found at the British Museum is enjoyed by millions each year. Because the museum is so large, many visitors take more than one day to explore. Much of the collection constantly rotates so you'll see something new with each visit. The most famous collections of the British Museum are: the Elgin Marbles, the collection of marble sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Athens; the extensive Egyptian collection; the Assyrian collection. The other departments of the museum include Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; Sudan; Asia; Coins and Medals; Conservation, Documentation and Science; Greek and Roman Antiquities; the Middle East; Portable Antiquities and Treasure; Prehistory and Europe; and Prints and Drawings. The National Gallery

The National Gallery in London, founded in 1824, houses a rich collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. No other collection possesses such consistent quality, or tells the story of Western European painting better.

It is open to all, 361 days of the year, free of charge. Almost all of the 2,300 paintings in the National Gallery's collection are on permanent display. The collection represents the greatest Western European painters including Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Turner, Rembrandt, Degas, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Rubens, Velazquez, Van Dyck, Titian and Bellini. One section of the Gallery called Puzzling Pictures contains pictures with some aspect of history or unusual subject that raises questions. Pictures can give clues to the culture and decorative arts of the time as well as to the inventions of the period. This is an interesting approach to the pictures that is recognized in the Gallery. The collection is not static. Acquisitions are added whenever possible, and private collectors loan their paintings to the Gallery. Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the British monarch since 1837. Although it is used for many official events and receptions held by the Queen, Buckingham Palace's 19 state rooms are open to visitors during August and September while the Queen makes her annual visit to Balmoral. The rooms house some of the Royal family's greatest treasures including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Canaletto. They are also exquisitely furnished with some of the finest French and English furniture. You can visit the spectacular Palace Ballroom and see the traditional horseshoe-shaped table lavishly decorated for a State Banquet. On display you can see the silver gilt from the Grand service, first used to celebrate the birthday of George III in 1811 as well as jewelled cups, ivory tankards, chased dishes, sconces, shields and basins.

The Palace's gardens with views of the west front of the Palace and the lake are also worth seeing.

The Changing of the Guard is a splendid ceremony that takes place in front of Buckingham Palace at 11. 30 every day in summer, every other day in winter, and lasts about 45 minutes.
